NICOLAS LAINAS traces its roots to a small shoe repair shop opened by founder Alexandros Papadopoulos in Plaka, a historic district near the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. Though exact records are scarce, the brand’s origins date back to before 1952. Alexandros fled the turmoil in Izmir, Turkey, and settled in Athens—a city with a long-standing tradition of shoemaking and sandal crafting in Eastern Greece. After spending 10 to 20 years honing his skills as a craftsman, he eventually launched his own business.

Under the second generation, the company expanded in size, but it faced serious financial difficulties that brought it to the brink of closure. The turning point came when Alexandros’s grandson, Kyrios Lainas, took the reins. He downsized the struggling business and began rebuilding it together with his family and a trusted partner from the second generation, Stavros.

Kyrios Lainas achieved major success with a self-designed espadrille made from elastic materials. He painstakingly developed a sandal that was both unique and simple, combining elastic fabric with cloth—a product that became their best-seller for over 20 years. This design gained recognition across the Greek industry, and it was during this time that the brand name ΛΑΙΝΑΣ (LAINAS) was introduced to the world.

Today, the company is led by the fourth-generation owner, Nicolas Lainas. In his efforts to offer competitive prices that meet modern market demands, he began importing materials himself and later expanded into exports. The brand now sells not only across Italy and Europe but also to Japan.

Nicolas shares:
“I’ve always believed that focusing on one product type is the ideal approach in this industry. Leather sandals have been our main product since I joined the family business, and they’ve consistently been our best-sellers. I’ve always thought that if we could produce sandals year-round, we could achieve greater efficiency and improve quality, even at lower prices. I’m proud that we’re now able to do just that.
Exporting to Italy and serving trend-conscious clients for decades has elevated our design skills immensely. And exporting to Japan has taught us what it truly means to deliver high-quality products.
While we may not have a large factory, we employ a team of 10 in a warm, supportive environment. It means a lot to me that my family remains by my side, and that we support one another. We strive to offer our workers fair wages and a good quality of life, and they, in turn, show their appreciation by putting their full effort into crafting the best sandals possible. That mutual dedication is something I take great pride in.”
The company remains based in its original location in Plaka, and continuing operations there is a source of pride for Nicolas.
